Post subject:  Turnout Questions

A reader writes:

My question is regarding switches/turnouts: what do I need to do to wire them? Using LGB R1 manual that I hope to convert to remote/electric. Have no idea of electric requirements, etc. This is not like using the ATLAS HO snap tracks. I am a novice and really need help.

Thanks for getting in touch.

Do you have LGB remote turnouts now? LGB makes the best remote turnouts out of any of the major manufacturers. That said, they also made a power booster of some sort to get a little extra power to the mechanisms. I don't know if they make it any more.

Generally they supply a thin wire to do the job, like 20 gauge or thinner. Obviously you'll do better if you get something heavier, at least 18 gauge, or 16 if you don't mind the expense. You can use a spool of wire made for 12 volt garden lighting, or a spool of lamp cord (I used to get the latter from Radio Shack but that's not an option any more).

One important thing - even if you WANT to be 100% remote control, you should try to put the turnouts within easy reach. They attract gravel and things that are likely to jam up the works or derail your train. And you, frankly, will be better off if you can see them to make certain they've thrown.

Best of luck, sorry I can't be more specific at this time.
