For starters, usually. Battery works best for folks who want to control several trains individually on a single mainline. For running trains in circles - one train per loop, track power is usually easiest and least expensive to implement.

Now I see that my article on the benefits of different kinds of power needs updated - AristoCraft no longer exists, and Train Engineer has been supplanted by Revolution. But the general principles still apply:
