Sorry to be so slow getting in touch - I've been out of town most of the last two months. Building your RR up high will save your back. Live Steam users do that all the time because they spend so much time futzing with their locomotives.
If you're looking for something to connect your right-of-way to the ground visually, think about Bob Treat's method for making rocks and cliffs out of concrete fastened to a lumber and wire framework:http://familygardentrains.com/primer/ro ... cliffs.htm
Plus trestles are relatively inexpensive to build and can add a lot of interest.http://familygardentrains.com/primer/br ... restle.htm
Also, to add stations the same level as your track, could you attach, say a couple of 12x2 pressure treated boards sticking out one side of the right of way, maybe with extra support? Just some thoughts.
I have a little 5'x12' portable railroad that I set up on posts at train shows and open railroads for the kids to run. I HAVE been known to add a couple boards connecting under the curves at one end, screwed onto the bottom of the 5/4" ROW. They make the railroad more solid and give me some place to set buildings. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of that.
Have a great rest of the summer,
