When we started our first discussion forum, we tried everything we could to make the auto-signup feature work. For one thing, we didn't want folks with urgent questions to wait until we got around to processing their requests so they could post.
But no matter how we set them up, our autosignups were allowing hundreds of fake "new members" (spammers) to sign up a week.
Worse yet, we've seen sloppy signup requrements allow other forums to deteriorate into namecalling or whatever because the webmeister didn't even know who who his members were - a person he kicked off one week would simply change computers, log on under a different name and start the cycle again.
So we decided that:
- Everybody can read our forums.
- Only real people can use them.
When you sign up, you'll be asked for your real name, zip code, and other information. This information will NOT be visible to other members, but it will be visible to the site administrator (me). If the information you sign up with is incompleted or obviously false, we will delete it without bothering to contact you. If at any time we have reason to suspect you have used false information to sign up, or you become abusive of other members, we will delete your account. Of course, if you're a real person and plan to "play nice" and keep your comments "family friendly," you are most welcome, and we're sure you'll feel at home. We want nice people, and only nice people here.
