Post subject:  Making New Bright Trains more reliable?

A reader writes:

We have a bunch of New Bright tracks and trains, and we're having a great deal
of difficulty getting any consistent use out of them. I know, they're "cheap" trains,
but do you have any resources for improving, servicing, or otherwise making them more
functionable? Thanks!

Thanks for getting in touch. I'm guessing you've already seen our articles on Garden Railroading with Toy Trains here:

When you say "consistent," do you mean that they run sometimes and sometimes they don't?
The battery contacts in the tender and in the remote control unit (if you have one) can
get rusty and make bad contact. Some VERY fine sandpaper should help with that.

IF you're talking about staying on the track, the better the track the better the trains
run. If you are using plastic track on anything like a permanent RR try to fasten it
down to pressure-treated wood so that the pieces stay aligned.

Unfortunately there isn't a resource I can point to for more information - I seem to have
the only online resource that addresses these trains at all.

Please write back with more details or let me know if you try something and it works out.

Paul
