Sandor Bodo

Buddha Express

Sandor Bodo’s Trainscape installation deals with the nature of spiritual enlightenment, expressed symbolically. Multiple Buddhas, suffused with a light that radiates from within, rise from a desert of ignorance. The blissful meditation of the most fully Enlightened One is undisturbed, even by the train that roars straight through his head. This simple but powerful image underscores the powers of human concentration, and also casts light upon dualities that Buddhism and other spiritual systems seek to transcend: the temporal and the eternal, the internal and the external, and the fragile and the powerful.

Sandor Bodo maintains a multi-faceted artistic practice. He has worked extensively with photography (straight, panoramic, and stereoscopic), sculpture, studio furniture, film and video, performance art, and sound installations. The threads that unify his work in these media include an interest in politics, a surreal layering of materials and images, a wry sense of humor, and an abiding interest in narrative and theatricality.
