Written by Paul D. Race for Family Garden Trains(tm)

Since about 2003, Family Garden Trains has been using digital photos to illustrate various aspects of garden railroading. When Paul started taking his own digital camera to "open railroads," we began getting some pretty inspiring shots, many of which have been used as title pages on our Family Garden Trains home page, in articles, and in our newsletters. But we never had time to organize the photos we were using so folks could navigate through them. We still don't have time to do them all, or to do all of the railroads included justice, but we're going to get started anyway

We are beginning with photos that we're already hosting, because they've been used as title photos for our home page or newsletters. A number of these photos are stored in very large files because we wanted to capture important detail. So if you have a dial-up collection, you might plan on getting a cup of coffee while you're waiting for the photo to download.

Paul in his natural habitatBy the way, when I visit an open house, I always introduce myself and say that I operate the "Family Garden Trains" web site and that I'd like to take photos for our web pages. But I occasionally get contacted by folks who didn't realize what I was saying and are surprised to see their railroads on a web page they reference all the time. If that's you, I was the 5'11" somewhat pudgy chap with the English cabbie hat, the freckles turning to age spots, the white beard, the glasses, the medium-priced digicam, and the impertinent questions about construction or maintenance.

Why Don't We Have Hundreds of Photos in our Gallery? - Hosting many very large files costs money - both for hard drive storage at our ISP, and for bandwidth when people download many huge files. Due to increased traffic and content, we've been forced to raise our level of internet service several times over the past several years, and this isn't necessarily a great time to raise it again. In case you wondered, we DO have hundreds of high-resolution photos on our web page, but they're mostly in our Primer ("how-to") pages, because we want to make certain people understand our instructions. And that will always take priority.

That said, we do have many more photographs that we plan, or at least hope to add eventually, so stay tuned.

Please contact us if you see we've mislabeled something or want to add more information about a photo, or if you have any other concerns related to this page.
